Shalom. Grip Grand here. You may not know me, but I swear, I’m in Rec-League. I’m totally on so many songs with those guys. Anyway, in an effort to prove that the Rec isn’t as cool as they claim, and in order to establish my nerd majesty at the same time, my first post to this here Rec-League site (I love the name, “Routine Fly”, by the way…sports references are so masculine) will be dedicated to my weekly comic book pull list. If you don’t know what a pull list is, you are not hip-hop, son. Wait, I mean, you are not a giant dork, son. But I am. And that’s why I have a pull list, which is a list of all the comics my local shop will pull and set aside for me to buy on my weekly visit. So here it is. Oh, and if you think I should be writing about rap or some shit like that, I don’t even know what that is anymore. I only listen to music made on, for, or by cell phones.
Grip’s Pull List for Wednesday, December 19, 2007:
Lord, did I pick a bad week to start this exercise. Slim pickings…
I think there’s only one book actually on my list this week–The Chemist #2, from Image–and that’s not any indication of its quality, I just happen to know someone who’s really into chemistry. The first issue was OK, but I basically buy this one for the title.
None of my other regular books are coming out this week. There’s some stuff I may take a look at, though. A second printing of Marvel’s Captain Marvel #1 is coming out, and I missed it the first time around. The author (Brian Reed) also wrote New Avengers: Illuminati, which I enjoyed, so who knows. Of course, the death of Captain Marvel is supposed to be one of the key moments in Marvel history, and now he’s back. But so is everyone else…and it worked for the Winter Soldier, so why not Mar-Vell?
In the wake of World War Hulk, Incredible Hulk #112 is coming out, so I might flip through and see what happens next to the Green Goliath. Some WWH tie-in with the Warbound is also scheduled for this week, but I’ve had enough of tie-ins lately.
A new issue of Iron Fist is also out…stopped following this during the first arc and haven’t caught back up, although people seem to love it. Maybe I should also be reading Mighty Avengers this week, but I’m not caught up. Hope I haven’t missed too many important clues about the impending Skrull invasion. Oh, well.
So what does DC have to offer this week? Not much, it seems. I used to buy Shadowpact (because I love Fables, also written by Bill Willingham), but I stopped, and I only miss it a little…I do like that Detective Chimp. But Shadowpact is no Fables (what is?), so I won’t be picking it up this week. Likewise, up until a couple of issues ago I was enjoying the Brave and the Bold, also releasing this week, but I’ve lost interest. George Perez’s art is classic, and the stories aren’t bad…still, I’m not hooked. I like a book that I can really look forward to reading every time it comes out. This is no longer it.
Ditto for Justice League of America. This was one of my pull-list staples, and I still like the art, but for some reason the current arc isn’t doing it for me story-wise (and I even enjoyed the Lightning Saga, reviled by so many). Usually any book with “Justice” in the title is good by me, but this new arc started out a little too Super Friends for my taste, so I dropped it. Maybe time will prove me wrong, in which case I’ll pick up the trade. Maybe.
As far as Countdown and its many tie-ins, I dropped this whole pile a while back and I don’t regret it. Normally I’m a Crisis apologist…on Infinite Earths, Identity, Infinite (again), 52, whatever. I liked ‘em all. This new shit, though…well, DC knows it’s unpopular, and despite having some interesting aspects and a few good issues here and there of this title or that, overall Countdown feels muddled at best, and the DC universe (and its continuity) is suffering because of it. Better titles like Black Adam or events like the Sinestro Corps war are good on their own, but I couldn’t even tell you when they’re happening in relation to Countdown. Maybe it doesn’t even matter…and I don’t know if that’s good or bad.
Anyway, enough of my yappin’. Stay tuned to see whether next week’s list will be any better than this week’s.
‘Til next time…
Keep it bagged and boarded,
Grip
Grip! You’re married, I’m still single. Don’t drag me back into this shit! Wtf?!?!
p.s. I went out on a date with a girl that works for Dark Horse. I think she was kind of weirded out by how pumped I was on Alien Vs. Predator. She’s a Buffy fan. Oh well. She wouldn’t have a job if it wasn’t for Aliens fighting Predators fighting Terminators fighting Robocops! Right? 1988, what’s up?!?!? I’m an old old man.
On the nerdy comic book reference tip, notice the Batman Vs. Superman billboard in the background of I Am Legend (so many hip-hop artists album title in 2 years).
PEACE!!!!!!!!
