Well, I've done my homework (good advice, J46les!) and it would appear that (get this) other people have opinions that differ from mine!! Isn't that crazy? Anyway, it turns out that my "theory" is all wrong. How do I know? J46les told me! And I quote: "I have to be honest that you’re theory is all wrong."
First, let's ignore the glaring misuse of the word "you're" to indicate possession (the word you want is "your", kiddo... "you're" is a contraction of the words "you are", as in "you are theory"...and despite what you may believe, I myself am not, in fact, theoretical. Moreover, you go on to misuse the contraction "it's" further down...I see this is a problem area for you. Didn't a wise person once say something about doing your homework? Or should I say "you're" homework?). I know what J46les has to say is true because the comment begins "I have to be honest". Well, thanks for not lying. So let's suppose the comment that follows is a true fact -- my theory is all wrong. Which is to say, my theory that public perception is unfairly weighted to favor one's initial breakout performance is flawed. So if I'm wrong, then the public is evidently not holding artists like Canibus up to the (perhaps impossibly) high standards they set with their first genius appearances, and instead is judging each release in a vacuum, as it were, with no referent to earlier efforts. Now, I don't believe that for a second. But that's what makes it "my" theory, I guess. At any rate, clearly J46les believes either that recent Canibus is just as good or better than the verse I mention above, or, on the other hand, believes that the process of "reviewing" music doesn't or shouldn't allow for qualitative comparisons between like items (for instance, new verse vs. old verse). Of course, views on music are subjective, so whatever floats your boat will work. But my "theory" was about public perception and not really about whether Canibus is still good or not. One of the things I did say is "all of the rappers below went on to make quality music after their first memorable appearance", so I guess J46les is in agreement with me there. But the comment "to state that Canibus has failed to live up to the 'Beast from the East Verse' is completely and utterly wrong" bothers me, since I did not, in fact, state that. I did imply that he may not have gotten a fair shake with the audience since then, simply because his first appearance was so amazing. I now have proof that at least one person gave him the benefit of the doubt. This may be the exception that proves the rule, as I believe the broader public's general apathy towards Canibus' overall career speaks for itself.

In closing, opinions are just that...opinions. But, as J46les knows, it helps to be well-informed when forming them. So I encourage everybody, in the words of one great scholar, to "do your homework people". Do them real good. And when I say "them", I mean "your homework people"...since that's what you've got if you don't put a comma between "homework" and "people".

Thanks again to J46les!
Love,
Grip

I have to be honest that you're theory is all wrong. To state that Canibus has failed to live up to the "Beast from the East Verse" is completely and utterly wrong. Go listen to his latest track, "Poet Laureate Infinity." The track has 1,000 bars, in the form of five 200 bar verses, and is layered in such a way that "when you mix it and spread it throughout five channels, [you have the ability] to mix the track differently every time."
Since it's release close to 1000 mixes have been each unique and different. Who else can create an infinite rhyme. Lyrically Canibus would without a doubt take out any rapper in existence. Hands down!!! Do your homework people.

I fixed my misspelling, so now the comment Richie made above makes no sense. Ha!
The Canibus song that starts "I never freestyle for free" is, in fact, How We Roll, the one I mentioned people should check for again up above.
Common Sense told me "he used to love her"....that was in '94.

i forgot the name of the canibus song, the one that clark kent produced, it was the first song i heard from him and my personal favorite. one of the lines is "hop in the back seat of a cab and rhyme/ till the meter says nine/ nine/ nine/ nine..." that song is the shit. i think it's the verse that starts " i never freestyle for free/ without chargin ni@@as a fee/ it'll cost you a braincell just to cypher with me.." he had punchlines for sure

common sense told me canibus was his favorite rapper, that was in '97.

oc told me it took him a year to write "times up"... i didn't realize how funny that is untill i just typed it... he said it was because it felt like a weird time signature.

rass kass sounds like he's reading a textbook in his raps. i like that verse though.

Thanks for clearin up that foramen magnum line for me. I think Ahmad's verse is pretty damn slick as well. His punchlines aren't as meaty but his delivery and word play ride the beat so well. 2 of these songs have been played within the last week in my itunes!
