Madlib Sampled Me, Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bong
OK, I know what you’re thinking. The title of this post is a clever ruse, it has a double meaning, it needs to be taken at more than face value. Because, clearly, it can’t be true. There has to be a twist, a hook, a catch. It can’t possibly be the case that yours truly, Grip Grand, has somehow slipped out of obscurity and into the wider cultural continuum of hip-hop, his voice sampled by one of the genre’s maddest (and most obsessively collected) scientists…can it? Can it??!!
In short, it can. It did. It is. Whatever the question I asked above was, the answer is affirmative. In so many words, Madlib sampled me.
Don’t believe me? Well, listen to this unreleased track I recorded at the Look Records studios over a Madlib beat. I call it “Charmed I’m Sure”…or “Griplib” for short.
Now listen to this track, the “2 Brothers From The Gutter” Remix. This is a Percee P song off his album “Perseverance The Remix” , which Madlib also produced (having already produced the original, non-remix album not too long ago).
See what I mean? Pardon my self-promotion, but, man…that made my day. It may be of little significance, but it’s nice all the same. Thanks, Madlib.

Well, there’s no denying it. But I bet you wish he sampled you on a song that was slightly more listenable. I know I do. There’s a reason that most producers don’t sample drums with applause on them.
