Well, we’re back. Let’s cut to the chase…here’s some shit that got sampled and the shit that sampled it. Today I’ve chosen to focus on a single album, albeit one that has provided the foundation for a number of different tracks. That album is Lamont Dozier’s Black Bach.
I copped this gem in the oh-so-slim Soul bin at my local punk rock record store, and at $2.99 it seemed like quite a find. That was before I knew it had already been thoroughly ravaged by previous producers. Nonetheless, I might still be able to squeeze a few cuts out of this one. It has legs, if you know what I mean. So lets take a listen to some of the sides on this particular platter, as well as the rap songs they, uh, inspired.
This first cut is called “Blue Sky and Silver Bird”…
It was sampled by Ant for the emo-licious Atmosphere classic, “The Woman With The Tattooed Hands”…I can’t really stand the lyrics for this one, so here’s the instrumental, which is the good part.
This next cut, “Prelude/Rose” is really two songs in one, and it gave birth to two different tracks…
The first (derived from “Prelude”) is Outkast’s “Jazzy Belle”…
The second (from “Rose”) is Shyne’s “More Or Less” (produced by Kanye West).
Our last Lamont Dozier treat for today is entitled “Shine”…
Of course, this was the source of, among other things, Pharoahe Monche’s Soundbombing II slammer, “Mayor”…
I say “among other things” because “Shine” also served as the basis for “Make It Home” by Spitfiya and Anthony Hamilton (off the Barbershop 2 Soundtrack...what do you mean you don’t have it?). And that’s not the only double-dip. “Blue Sky and Silverbird” was also used for Biggie’s “Living in Pain” (off the ill-advised Duets–The Final Chapter...let’s hope that’s the truth). Another cut, Dozier’s “Put Out My Fire”, was sampled by Cormega for The True Meaning’s “Instrospective”…but I don’t have that Cormega on me, so I didn’t include it. The point is, as many times as Black Bach has been sampled, I’m guessing producers will continue to turn to it for years to come. I know I will!
The blacker the Bach, the sweeter the juice,
Grip
Good job with the Ant instrumental and not the song. I’m not really that into excessive and meaningless symbolism for the sake of sounding tormented. That beat is hot. I would have made it better though. And by that I mean I would have stolen more of the original song.
