Grip’s Pull List for 03/05/07
Damn. Wednesday again? Aw, yeah, again and again. So what’s the drill this week? Let’s take a look at some funny books and see if we can’t separate the wheat from the chaff.
Before we get into the future, let’s take a look at the past…week in comics, that is. Here they are, in two words or less.
Mouse Guard: Judon’t know?
Marvel Zombies 2: Ultimately pointless.
Captain America: Hot beans.
Daredevil: Pretty good.
Kick-Ass: Too short.
Ultimate Spider-Man: Predictable quality.
Thor: Finally over.
All in all, a decent week for comics (although my two-word reviews may indicate otherwise). Nothing knocked me out…Kick-Ass was pretty close, I just wanted more of it. That’s definitely a good thing. The Cap story is great overall. Daredevil finished an arc that was not as good as some previous ones, but which ended nicely. Thor was good, but it felt like set-up for the next 100 issues, and my attention span is shortening by the minute. Mouse Guard is an anomaly that you probably don’t need to know about, as it is not hardcore enough for the average Routine Flyer. Marvel Zombies has worn off whatever charm it once had (best covers ever, though). Ultimate Spidey was enjoyable as always…but not Earth-shattering. I guess in these days of Captain America assasinations and shocking Skrull reveals I kind of want every book to be breathtakingly epic and to end with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger. What, is that too much to ask? Perhaps…so will this Wednesday’s books fit the bill? Only time will tell. Let’s take a look at the line-up.
Ooh, not much for me. There’s a bunch of books coming out that I no longer read or will wait for trades on. These include Moon Knight (liked the first 2 arcs more than this one) and the new Dark Tower series (bought the first arc in hardcover, waiting on this one too). Stuff like the next issue of X-Force I’ll probably skip, as well. The first issue wasn’t compelling enough for me to buy the rest, but it may be great in the end. It sure does look pretty, after all.
So what will I buy? Just these:
Logan #1…normally I wouldn’t cop something like this nowadays. This series probably won’t effect the overall Marvel Universe one iota. Could be a throwaway. But I really like the creative team behind it (artist Eduardo “100 Bullets” Risso and writer Brian “Runaways” K. Vaughn…who also writes for Lost, your favorite nighttime soap). And I really like Wolverine. So I’m there, at least for issue one.
Why do I even mention Omega the Unknown anymore? No one I know reads it. But I’m just trying to be thorough. So what if I alone will buy it?…”it” being issue #6.
The Twelve #3 gives us another taste of a good old-fashioned Golden Age mystery men story, and it’s not the only book currently trying to do so (I’m looking at you, Superpowers…step up your game). Still, I’ve decided to only buy one of these books for now. And this is the one (despite my love of all things Alex Ross).
Wow, is that really it? The consequence of cutting titles from my pull list is that I’m not left with much to read. But quality over quantity is my new motto. My motto also includes a disclaimer about how I will now buy certain titles only in trade format, even if they’re among my very favorites (Fables and Criminal come to mind). It’s kind of a long motto. I don’t think it’s gonna fit on my flag.
That’s all for now. Why don’t you go get some fresh air for a change? Go to the park…take your little brother. Don’t forget to bring a jacket! Until next week…
Bagged and boarded,
Grip

What? No Batman?

Funny you should say that…Batman is one of my favorites (despite my assertion that Superman could beat him in a fight), but his books have suffered from a lot of uneven material over the years. Of course, that’s true of all the biggest comic figures. But the word on the street is that the main Batman title is once again top notch thanks to the twisted take of current scribe Grant Morrison. So who knows, now that the first Morisson arc is collected in a nice hardcover edition, maybe I’ll pick one up. Just for you, Richie. I’ll let you know how it is.

What ever happen to Spawn? Is he the Sam Bowie of the comics world?
