Yeah, I’m late again. What are we ever to do? Since I write this particular blog mostly for my own amusement, I’ve decided to go easy on me. “You’ve had a tough time of it lately, old chum,” I’ll say to myself. “Just don’t let it happen again.” And then I’ll probably mouth off right back with some snappy retort, like “Who do you think you are, old man? You can’t tell me what to do! You’re not the boss of me!” Yeah, that sounds about right. So just picture all that happening, and then we can move right along to the funny books. Zooooom!!!

So, being late with this blog and all, I never got to give you, the good citizens of Broketropolis (or maybe Grypton?), my thoughts on all those books from the end of March as well as my recommendations for this past Wednesday’s cavalcade of comics! How are you even still alive? It’s amazing. Really. So, anyway, here’s what I bought and here’s what I thought.

As far as the first un-reviewed batch from 2 weeks ago, which included two Avengers titles, three Ultimate titles, and one Daring Devil, only the New Avengers really did it for me. All the other books were fine, I just wouldn’t waste a bunch more words on ‘em.

This past Wednesday, I ended up coming home with a few things. The big gun was Secret Invasion, which was pretty tight if you’ve been reading all of Bendis’ other titles for a few years, and maybe slightly less so if you haven’t. There weren’t that many notable Skrull reveals, unless–SPOILER ALERT–you consider Dum Dum Dugan and Iron Man’s butler Jarvis to be top-tier characters. I guess Hank Pym was the big one. Really any of these have the potential to be major (given the characters’ intimate access to the inner workings of the Marvel U). As far as the ship full of 70’s heroes, I dunno what to make of it, but they’re probably just imposters. And, in closing, my theory right now is that the “He” in the sinister phrase “He loves you” here refers to Nick Fury…but I plan to change my mind often. END OF ALERT.

What else did I get, let’s see…Omega the Unknown had some cool guest art from a dude who did some work for Frank Zappa once. But it didn’t make a darn bit of sense. So there’s that.

Kick-Ass didn’t fail to please, but I still want more. There better be quite a few issues to come at this pace, because there’s not a ton of what you might call “events” per book. Still, writing’s good, art looks great, a top-notch comic.

The Twelve also “dropped,” and it was alright, although it seems to have let off the gas a bit since the last issue. Still good.

So what’s up for next week? Well, I hate to admit it, but…I don’t really see anything worth my bucks coming out. I’m kind of shocked, really, but that’s the way it is. Sorry to let you down. Need something to buy? Try some trades. I myself will be working my way through the Walking Dead hardcovers. Wish me luck.

Still bagged and boarded,

Grip

By the way, Battlestar Galactica Season 4 starts tonight (Friday the 4th)…true nerds know where they’ll be at ten PM. Sci-Fi! Oh, Starbuck, I’ve missed you so (and for those who haven’t watched this show since the 70’s, Starbuck’s a chick in the new version). As a side note, geeks who dig hot sci-fi chicks really need to get down with this show. Its ladies were voted the hottest bunch in the whole geek world…or something…by none other than Wizard magazine. For what that’s worth. Don’t believe me?

That’s just one example. Another is, this one time two chicks slept together on the show and one of them was a sexy robot and the other one was Lucy Lawless! From Xena! And she was ALSO a sexy robot!! Oh yeah, it’s like that.

SECRET INVASION! looks very promising

Something to say?
