Some of my favorite verses ever…
Man, I am so happy I found this song. My elation was such, in fact, that I had to share it with the world in the form of a YouTube video. Oh, and this post.
Anyway, I came across this track on a mini-disc mixtape I made back in 2001. I don’t remember what the song (or “freestyle”) is called or where it’s from originally. I hope someone out there will refresh my memory. All I know is that rappers Gaston and Rise deliver some of my favorite verses ever. For punchline-packed poetry, it doesn’t get much better than this. First, you have what might be the only Gaston verse I’ve ever heard, and it’s a heater. The Rise verse, which is like a clinic in how to write punchlines, almost defies description, unless I make up a word that combines “bananas” and “bonkers”…it’s banonkers. Go listen to the whole thing a few times through, then try to pick a favorite line. It ain’t easy.

this era of rap is so great… when people clung to each and every word. Rap was SO lyric driven it was ridiculous…. explains why a lot of the beats were so simple and mellow.
