You do not know another rapper like Rob Rush. Aside from being born with a name that begs to be spray-painted on the back of an over size garment in loud colors, Mr. Rush shares very little in common with the typical MC. When asked about where he fits in the ever-widening hip-hop spectrum Rob responds, “I love Hip Hop, but not like those girls you know with the mesh hats and 3 layers of lip gloss, or that kid with giant headphones on at a show wearing his backpack talking about “keepin’ it real” all the time. However I’d love to go to a party with both of them, I’m sure we’d find something to talk about. I’m a kid born 10 years too late with bit of a beer belly.”
Rob’s group, The Moonies and his duo, Cumulus & Rob Rush have both enjoyed impressive sales figures in niche markets worldwide. Childhood Hero is his first solo work, and reflects a tremendous amount of growth and maturity. The album’s most striking feature is its diversity. With influences ranging from Big Daddy Kane to Bad Religion, the album is stylistically and lyrically wide-ranging. Childhood Hero is one of those rare ambitious projects that can boast its own improbable cohesion as its most striking accomplishment. Childhood Hero plays out like a tour of underground hip-hop’s past present and future. The album will strike the trained hip-hop ear like a suburban version of Aceyalone’s classic “Book of Human Language,” in that it tackles a wide array of subject matter while being held together by an MC whose skills and personality are so engaging that they manage to make it clear to the listener how it all fits together.
The eleven songs on Childhood Hero range from bust your shit open battle raps, to party tracks, to light-hearted self-effacing nerd-rap, to honest emotional introspection. “The songs come out that way because that’s how I am,” says Rob “it’s not an excuse for inconsistency, it’s a reason for diversity… is that convincing?”
